FOUNDATION PHASE

Grade 1-3 (3 classes per grade – average number per class: 28)

The Foundation Phase classes have busy, happy days that are filled with fun whilst the learner works and develops the important and necessary skills for life and further learning. Class numbers are kept to manageable sizes, enabling the teacher to give individual attention to her pupils.

LEARNING AREAS COVERED:

Literacy – English, Afrikaans and Xhosa
Numeracy – Mathematics
Life skills ( Arts and Culture/Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Life Orientation)
Computer mastery and Media skills are covered throughout the year.

SCHOLASTIC AND PERSONAL GROWTH EVALUATION:

This is done through Continuous Assessment on an Outcomes Based Programme. The Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) has been implemented since 2004 and this is simpler and more streamlined than Curriculum 2005.

The ultimate aim is to ensure that learners leave the schooling system as critical thinkers who are confident and socially responsible citizens.

HOMEWORK:

This is of value to pupils of all ages and helps them build on what they have already learnt in the classroom. Facilities are available whereby girls remaining after school may do homework whilst waiting for extramural sessions to commence or whilst waiting to be fetched. Pupils have a homework diary in which homework for the day is recorded. Parents are to sign the diary daily after homework has been completed.

REMEDIAL EDUCATION:

A specialist teacher is available to assist children during the school day. The school’s Didactical Aid Team supports pupils with specific learning and language needs in group situations after school hours. Occupational therapy is provided on a private basis for those children who need specific assistance during school hours.
